Advent With Your Children

adventcandleschristcandleThe Christmas season is upon us and as part of our children’s programming at Crossroads we will be celebrating the season of Advent as we prepare our hearts and minds for the Christmas season. Advent is the season of light, hope, and promises fulfilled.
The Advent season began on Sunday, November 30th and continues through Sunday, December 21st. Very simply, Advent means “coming” or “arrival” and on each of these days we will light our Advent candles and talk about what each one represents, We will discover Who came, Who took part in this miraculous story, Why He came, What it means to us, and When He will be coming again.
Christmas can be an extremely hectic time of year so it is no wonder that we are often too busy to sit and remember what the season is truly about. This example is passed down to our children who begin to see the holiday in light of sales, presents and lights. In the Children’s Ministry we want to make sure we have a fun celebration that also enforces what Christmas is all about. Celebrating Advent helps us do this and the good news is that you can easily do the same at home as well!
There are many resources available like the books “Treasuring God in our Traditions” by Noel Piper or “The Greatest Gift” by Ann Voskamp. If you are jumping into Advent a little late, you could always just begin a new tradition of reading parts of the Biblical account every week leading up to Christmas day. How about finding or making some ornaments that represent the different parts of the story to hang on your tree?
Whatever you do, take a moment (maybe this moment right now), breathe in and remember the peace we can experience through Jesus in the midst of holiday craziness. Your kids are sure to notice this!
May your upcoming holiday celebrations be full of Joy and Peace in JESUS…Merry CHRISTmas!
